At TanTara Transportation, safety isn’t just a priority—it’s woven into the company culture. Tim Hull, TanTara’s Safety and Compliance Manager, is responsible for upholding this culture on a daily basis. Tim brings unique perspectives from his experiences in law enforcement, trucking, and now safety management.
From Law Enforcement to Trucking
Tim’s journey to TanTara was anything but conventional. After retiring from a fulfilling career in law enforcement, Tim sought a rewarding “retirement job”. His inspiration struck when he saw a long line of grain trucks near Grain Processing Corporation (GPC).
“I had farmed with my father-in-law before he passed and had always enjoyed the agricultural aspect,” Tim explains. “I bought a small farm back in 2012, so trucking felt like a natural transition.”
Tim quickly pursued his CDL, beating the clock before new CDL regulations kicked in during 2022. Shortly thereafter, he joined TanTara, driving a dedicated route from Muscatine, Iowa, to Portage, Indiana.
“TanTara immediately felt like family. They genuinely value their employees,” he shared.
Stepping Up To Safety
When TanTara’s long-time Safety Manager Mike Hines retired due to health reasons, Tim saw an opportunity not just to step into a role, but to continue Mike’s legacy of care and diligence.
“Mike was beloved by everyone,” Tim acknowledges. “He set a high standard, and I was inspired to build on his relationships with our drivers and expand our safety initiatives.”
Tim’s approach has already continued TanTara’s commitment to safety, including the implementation of an Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) program, further demonstrating the company’s forward-thinking approach.
Reflecting on Trucking Life
When asked about his favorite part of his current role, it was clear Tim enjoys connecting with the drivers.
“I genuinely enjoy getting to know the drivers personally, learning about their lives outside of work. Building those relationships is the best part of the job.”
While Tim is thriving in his new role, there are aspects he misses of his days of trucking.
Tim firmly believes TanTara’s diligent vehicle maintenance practices should set a standard across the trucking industry.
“Drivers frequently tell me how neglected the equipment was at their previous jobs,” Tim notes. “While we don’t expect every company to match TanTara exactly, for the sake of safety, I wish more companies would invest in proper maintenance.”
Tim gives special credit to TanTara’s maintenance team. “Our shop crew amazes me daily with their dedication and skill,” he added.
Continued Commitment
Through Tim’s experience and dedication, TanTara Transportation continues to affirm its commitment to safety, driver well-being, and industry-leading practices.
“Safety isn’t just a policy at TanTara. It’s a way of life,” Tim concludes.
We’re proud to have Tim Hull guiding our safety initiatives and making TanTara an exemplary place to work.
